LILLE
Close to the border with Belgium, Lille can lay claim to being the most ‘European’ city of France. Renowned for its hospitality, generosity and friendly disposition, this quaint city is perfectly poised to offer a truly international welcome.
Whether you’re strolling along the Grand Place, wandering the Old Quarter of Lille or admiring the Vielle Bourse (the Old Stock Exchange), discovering Lille is a pleasure. This is evident at the Lille Braderie, a huge street market that attracts between two and three million visitors each year. Be sure to try the gastronomic specialties of the city including carbonnade, a Flemish beef dish, and waterzoï, a fish stew.
Lille has a tradition of hosting major events, both cultural and sporting. The Stade Pierre-Mauroy is an ultra-modern venue with a retractable roof and the ‘Boîte à Spectacles’ – a sliding pitch to accommodate other sporting events and concerts.
PARIS
Arguably the world’s most picturesque city, the French capital oozes class and culture around each of its twenty arrondissements.
A short distance from the centre of Paris lies the energetic district of Saint-Denis. Here, you’ll find the Basilica of Saint-Denis, Street Art Avenue and the Cité du Cinéma, a film studio complex and celebration of the art of cinema.
As the venue for the opening match and RWC 2023 Final, Saint-Denis is also home to the country’s largest sporting venue, the Stade de France, host to the 1998 FIFA World Cup, 2003 IAAF World Championships, Rugby World Cup 2007 and UEFA Euro 2016.
LYON
The history of Lyon, the capital of Roman Gaul, reads like a Who’s Who of French cultural pioneers, including the Lumière brothers (the godfathers of cinema) to Paul Bocuse, a three-star Michelin chef.
Situated within the regions of Beaujolais and Côtes-du-Rhône, Lyon is famous for wine but also has a rich food tradition. No visit to Lyon would be complete without a visit to one of the ‘bouchons’, traditional restaurants unique to Lyon serving the local specialties and found in the alleyways of the Old Town, the Terreaux district, Rue Mercière and Rue des Marronniers.
Rugby World Cup 2023 will welcome players and fans to the OL Stadium, the third largest in France. After hosting RWC 2007 and the European Challenge Cup final in 2016, Lyon is the all-round ultimate fan experience.
AVIGNON
Just 50 minutes from Marseille via TGV, Avignon offers itself as a viable option to Marseille during Rugby World Cup France 2023.
Its character and history alone are enough of a seduction, let alone its proximity to France’s most famous grapes. How tempting it will be to spend a day in the vineyards sampling the Chateauneuf du Pape on a tour including lunch, accompanied by a delicious lunch, of course.
The city boasts attractions including the Musee du Petit Palais, Basilique Saint Pierre and enough pavement cafes to keep you seated for an entire afternoon as you watch the world go by.
MARSEILLE
Marseille, France’s main port, is known as the ‘Gateway to the Orient’. This cosmopolitan city, open to the world from its prime position on the Mediterranean Sea, has been an important cultural and commercial crossroads.
Energise whilst there with climb to Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde (‘Good Mother’) which overlooks the city, stroll through the legendary Panier district, or relish a bouillabaisse at the Old Port. Escape the bustle of the city by hiking the trails of the Sormiou or Sugiton calanques, rocky inlets which offer breath-taking views over the sea.
Known for its passion for sport, Marseille welcomes Rugby World Cup 2023 to the Stade Vélodrome, after the successful hosting of the 1998 FIFA World Cup, Rugby World Cup 2007 and UEFA Euro 2016. The undoubted highlight will be Vélodrome’s hosting of two Quarter-Final clashes across the weekend of 14-15 October 2023.
